pedroYon is no ordinary reporter. A former Green Beret with U.S. Army Special Forces,

It began with a bridge. On the morning of March 1, 2010, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated on Tarnak River Bridge near Kandahar, Afghanistan, killing multiple civilians and one American soldier. While the destruction of a single bridge might ordinarily pose a mere inconvenience to the U.S. war machine, in the oppressive terrain of Afghanistan it became a logistical chokepoint, halting ground-based operations for days.
War correspondent Michael Yon sought the answer to an uncomfortable question: who was responsible for the security of that bridge?
Yon is no ordinary reporter. A former Green Beret with U.S. Army Special Forces, he has spent more time embedded in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other journalist. His dispatches have produced some of the most memorable combat narratives of the war, and a large share of its most iconic images. Make no mistake; Michael Yon is not a dispassionate observer of the Columbia J-School variety. When writing about U.S. forces, he says "we." When writing about insurgents, he calls them terrorists or Taliban. And when reporting failures in the war effort, he names names. This has earned him both the respect and ire of senior military staff. In the case of the Tarnak River Bridge, the name most repeatedly mentioned as responsible for its security was Daniel Menard, the Canadian brigadier general in charge of Task Force Kandahar. Yon went public with this information.

Inside the Frontline

This link has been provided to me by one of our younger veteran members who I had a long discussion with about operations in Iraq and Afghanistan where he has had a couple of tours. I openly stated to him that I was glad that we had the cover of the jungle and entirely different conditions in which to exercise our various skills and this link which is very informative and revealing confirms that. Our boys are doing the same in the most atrocious, hazardous, unfamiliar conditions and we should be extremely proud of them. What an absolute shit hole of a place – although Peter Isaacs sent some beautiful photographs of the place as well, but not of this area. Further up north I think!

Cheers

Mick von Berg

Michael Yon is a remarkable journalist who isn't frightened to get down and dirty with the troops.

Greetings,
This weekend we lost eight more soldiers in a firefight.  I learned about it while they were still fighting, but did not report the attack until just before the media broke the story the next day.  Still unreported, to my knowledge, sources tell me that FOB Keating was destroyed and that troops were under siege for up to 24 hours before Air Force Pararescue got them out.  (Subject to confirmation.)

The fighting will only intensify.  We can beat these guys, but not under current conditions.  We need more troops and more gear now.  The enemy has massive home field advantages and we have not offset those
advantages.

Please
click for a video of the last two firefights that I got into with British forces.

Greetings,
This supposed "low intensity" war is high intensity for the handful on the burning end.  While London and Washington waffle over troop levels, Afghanistan is on course to surpass anything we ever saw in Iraq.  We can still turn this war around but at the current rate surely the war will be lost.  Indecision on a troop increase is a decision to lose the war.  The required information has been presented to leaders in Washington and London.  They have all the information needed to make a decision on troop levels.   Weak civilian leadership is sabotaging the war effort.

"A Story From War".
